United Nations Ends Restrictions on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit
United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to an American proposal removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his White House visit the coming week.
He became transitional president after leading an insurgent campaign that ousted the former president in the final month of 2024, ending thirteen long years of civil war.
America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that acknowledged Syria entered "a new era" following Assad's ouster.
Previously, he faced UN sanctions while commanding the religious organization HTS, once connected to the extremist organization. America delisted the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups this past July.
More Penalties Removed
The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.
The Syrian diplomatic chief expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, posting on social media: "The nation shows its gratitude toward America and allied countries for assisting the country and its population."
Upcoming White House Meeting
The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday comes after President Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.
The two leaders convened on their first occasion this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh while traveling through the region.
After that meeting, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" possessing a "powerful background".
His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria prior to breaking relations back in 2016.
Previous US Visit
Monday's visit does not represent the president's debut journey to the United States this year. In September, he became the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.
During his address, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
