Major Online Disruption Affects Dozens Sites and Apps

A large-scale web disruption has impacted many websites and applications worldwide, with users reporting issues connecting to the web after problems at Amazon’s cloud computing platform.

The impacted platforms include Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-operated services such as its primary shopping platform and the Ring security device manufacturer.

In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was affected along with its branches Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and additional accounts of difficulties reaching the HM Revenue and Customs site on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring users used networks to report their doorbells were not working.

Solely in the United Kingdom, reports of disruptions on individual applications totaled the many thousands for each platform.

Amazon reported that the problem started in the east coast of the United States at the cloud division, a unit that supplies vital internet framework for a host of businesses, who rent out capacity on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive online services service.

Soon after midnight (PDT) in the America (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “higher problem frequencies and latencies” for the cloud services in a region on the east coast of the United States. The cascading impact was seen to affect apps worldwide, and the problem monitoring service indicating outages with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that tracks internet outages, additionally noted a rise in issues on that morning, including several cases located in Virginia, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the issues began.
