Brave Rail Employee Receives Severe Injuries Amid Multiple Knife Incident on High-Speed Train

A courageous railway employee who intervened to protect passengers during a mass knife attack on a high-speed train has suffered critical wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Incident

CCTV video allegedly depicts the staff member attempting to halt the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders recounted a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train left Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through compartments.

The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Authorities announced a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Emergency Response and Consequences

The event on Saturday night resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have now been released from hospital.

A bystander filmed the suspect brandishing a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced officers on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "End my life, kill me."

“This awful event has created broad consequences. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – especially the courageous employee of train personnel whose family are being supported by trained officers,” said a high-ranking law enforcement official.

Union Reaction and Calls for Action

Rail unions were swift to praise staff and call for increased measures. A union leader stated he would be “seeking urgent meetings with authorities, rail employers and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best possible assistance, resources and robust procedures in operation”.

A different association leader urged the rail company and authorities “to act swiftly to review security, to help the impacted workers, and to ensure nothing like this happens again”.

Operator Commended for Rapid Thinking

The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been commended by association representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“He did not halt the service in the middle of two stations where it’s obviously challenging for the emergency services to access, but he continued traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the response was almost already there,” stated a union representative.

Further Information

Authorities stated they got the initial distress reports at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness recounted initially thinking if the event was a holiday joke, but quickly understood from individuals' faces that it was serious.

Police have stated there is nothing to suggest the event was a terror-related incident and have asked the community to provide with any further information.

Rail services on the affected line are anticipated to experience delays until Monday, with travelers advised to defer their journeys where possible.

Individuals with information that could help the investigation are encouraged to contact authorities by texting a specific number with a case code.
