2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Year of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their visibility has seemingly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are serious titles centered on frogs.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the wave in gaming seems uniquely pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be entering a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
